Why does our 90-year history matter? The seven factors we’re about to list spell out an acronym, because that’s how we (literally) roll. Our winter legacy starts and ends with our H-I-S-T-O-R-Y. Here are seven reasons Nokian Tyres remains the King of Winter.
History - How Nokian Tyres Began
In 1934, our plucky Finnish rubber company produced the Keliringas, the world’s first winter tire. We created it so trucks could navigate harsh Nordic conditions.
Ninety years later, we’re still building studded tires, non-studded tires and EV winter tires that protect drivers around the globe when roads are at their wintry worst.
Innovation - Why Nokian Tyres is a Tire Industry Pioneer
We don’t believe in resting on our achievements. The minute we launch a new winter tire, we get to work developing the next generation. In fact, we have more winter tire patents than any other tiremaker, a product of our longevity but also our commitment to continuous improvement.
Our passion for innovation shows in the world records we’ve set. Fastest car on ice. Fastest EV on ice. We’ve even set the world record for snow removal with an autonomous tractor.
Sustainability - How Nokian Tyres Leads the Tire Industry
We strive to make journeys more beautiful. That means prioritizing the environment when we make our tires. More than 90 percent of our products are ranked in the lowest categories of rolling resistance, which means they’re among the most energy-efficient tires on the market. That leads to lower fuel costs and emissions – a green win-win.
Our North American factory in Dayton, Tennessee is the only LEED v4 Silver-certified tire production facility in the world. And we’re teaming up with our winter recreation partner, POWDR, to plant a tree for every season pass it sells at select resorts in the United States and Canada.
Testing - Nokian Tyres Tire Testing is Key
For years before a Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta winter tire hits the snow and ice, we subject it to rigorous testing 150 miles north of the Arctic Circle. In fact, our Ivalo Test Center – better known by its infamous name of White Hell – is the largest company-owned winter tire test facility in the world. Harsh conditions in Ivalo enable us to test tires for as many as 200 days every year. Read more about our other Nokian Tyres test centers here.
Organization
We can’t make great tires unless people are wiling to sell them to you. That’s where our dealers across the United States and Canada come into play. Whether you’re on the Western edge of Canada, the South Florida shore or somewhere in between, there’s a dealer nearby who is great at telling our story.

Research and Development
Few tiremakers, if any, invest a larger percentage of their sales right back into R&D than Nokian Tyres. Our tire development expertise is a key ingredient in our secret sauce.
The result: smart tires. The world’s first winter tire with retractable studs. World records. And tires that are crafted to withstand the worst of winter.
You - Drivers Make Us the King of Winter
We saved the most important for last.
Nokian Tyres is the King of Winter because of you. We make our tires with your safety in mind. We’re able to grow because you keep buying them. And we’re with you on every journey you take.
Your safety is our guiding light, and that light shines through the darkest, stormiest winter days. You’re at the heart of our history. And you’re the key to our future, too.
